COLA young researchers met Nobel Laureates at the 2019 STS Forum 2019 in Kyoto, Japan
October 5-8, 2019 at Kyoto International Conference Center – Dr. Kritchawat Lowacharin a lecturer of College of Local Administration joined the Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS forum 2019) – the 16th Annual Meeting 2019 – in Kyoto, Japan. The event was opened by Japan Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe.
Science and Technology in Society Forum or STS Forum is the science and technology summit held annually in October at Kyoto International Conference Center, Kyoto Japan. The forum is the venue where the world top scientists, researchers, academicians, state administrators and world leaders exchange their experiences, advancements, scientific and technological policies in order to solve social problems.
STS Forum this year opened a stage for young scholars and researchers under the Young Leaders Project to expand their visions and to create a network for setting future scientific and technological policies. STS Forum invited 13 Nobel Prize winners from different fields around the world to give a talk and share their knowledge and viewpoints with 200 younger leaders. Dr. Kritchawat Lowacharin a lecturer of College of Local Administration and 4 lecturers were chosen by Office of the National Research Council to join the Forum this year.
Dr. Kritchawat Lowacharin said, “…We had a chance to meet and talk to 3 Nobel Prize winners: Professor Jerome Isaac Friedman, a physicist from MIT, US, who told us that the government must support basic research in parallel to applied research – “If you know what you are looking for, you are limited by what you know” – he said); Sir Richard Timothy Hunt, a biologist from the United Kingdom (now working in Okinawa) who said success in attaining development targets necessitates technical knowledge and political and sociological knowledge; and Professor Klaus von Klitzing, a physicist from Germany whose discovery has brought about changes in the SI measurement system and a change in this respect. It was very impressive to have a chance to talk to the three Nobel Prize winners in the STS Forum this year…”
