KKU Library develops PM 2.5 Smart Sensor with IOT technology

KKU Library performs the Green University policy of the university by developing different innovations that provide convenient services to users and KKU and KK folks

Because of the dust or air pollution in Khon Kaen and Thailand that exceeded the safety limit set by the World Health Organization during the end of last year through the beginning of this year, Khon Kaen University thus has brought the Iot technology to detect air pollutant so that the people and students in Khon Kaen would know the risk areas. This is under the Khon Kaen Smart City’s project. At the start, the Technology Office developed 10 sets of IOT for use in Khon Kaen University campus.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wanida Kanarkard, Director of KKU Library explained about the background of this innovation, “The Library has extended the project from the work of Information Technology Office. Students under their professional training were asked to join by showing their ideas and assist the project mentor, who was a staff member of the library. The students learned to solve the real problems and that was the beginning of the PM 2.5 sensor project using IOT technology.”

Mr. Panuwat Uthaiban, an information officer of KKU Library, the project mentor explained about the operating principles of P.M. 2.5 Smart Sensor with IOT technology:

  1. Change to use solar energy instead of electricity so that the equipment will use clean energy and help the world safe the energy. This is under the Green Library policy. The system can be installed at a place where there is no power.
  2. Decrease the size of the equipment box for convenience of installation that can be done without many technicians and reduce the accident that can happen during installation. This has been supported by KKU Maker Space.
  3. Increase sensors for measuring temperatures and moisture in the system for more information. Increase NB-IOT at areas without Wifi. This equipment has been supported by AIS.

There are 15 PM 2.5 Smart Sensor points on KKU campus and Khon Kaen city: at Faculties of Nursing, Ahriculture, Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science, Education, Business Administration and Accountancy, Veterinary Medicine, College of Local Administration, Si Than Lake, Science Park, Office of Khon Kaen Governor, Kaen Nakhon Lake, Rachamangala University of Technology Isan, and North East University. The data can be detected at Real Time at each point from: https://sites.google.com/view/pm25smartsensor/information

The work was presented to Khon Kaen Governor in the evaluation process at the town hall in September this year and has been placed in the KAN service App for Khon Kaen people.

Mr. Palit Lepawit and Mr. Jirapong Chomphukham, two computer information majors from Faculty of Information Technology and Business Administration of Rachamangala University of Technology Isan, Khon Kaen – the practicum students of KKU Library who took part in developing PM 2.5 Smart Sensor said, “We learned a lot from this project and can apply the knowledge we learned from class in the project and the job. We obtained experience from actual work and learned to work with friends from other institutions. We met and learned from staff members who were experienced and could provide us a lot of knowledge. Our work went on so smoothly.”
