KKU’s COLAB COLA KKU Partners with Local Community to Revolutionize Elderly and Vulnerable Care in Sakon Nakhon

Sakon Nakhon, Thailand – January 28, 2025 – In a groundbreaking initiative, the Center for Public Policy Innovation Development (COLAB COLA KKU) at Khon Kaen University’s College of Local Administration (COLA) has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Mai Sub-district, Ban Muang District, Sakon Nakhon, to drive innovative policies for the care of the elderly and vulnerable populations.

The collaboration, led by Dr. Suriyanon Pholsim, Assistant Dean for Student Development and Alumni Relations, marks a significant step in bridging academic knowledge with real-world community needs. The initiative is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to empower students to apply their learning to practical challenges.

On January 28, 2025, COLAB COLA KKU organized a hands-on field activity in Mai Sub-district. The course, led by Dr. Panpun RongHanam, Assistant Dean for Excellence Development, Research, and Lifelong Learning, and Dr. Rasita Dasri, focuses on equipping students with the skills to design innovative platforms and database systems for urban management.

Seventy third-year students from the Bachelor of Public Administration program, majoring in Urban Management and Urban Technology, participated in the activity. They conducted field surveys across all 10 villages in Mai Sub-district, working closely with community leaders to gather essential data for policy design and urban planning. This data will be instrumental in creating tailored solutions for the care of the elderly and vulnerable groups in the area.

The event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the College of Local Administration, represented by Dr. Suriyanon Pholsim, and the Mai Sub-district Administrative Organization, represented by Mr. Somdet Khaonakae, Mayor of Mai Sub-district. This agreement aims to strengthen the collaboration and ensure the effective development and implementation of the innovative platform.

Dr. Suriyanon Pholsim emphasized the dual purpose of the initiative: “This project not only aims to create actionable public policies but also seeks to refine data collection methodologies for future applications. It’s a win-win for both academia and the community.”
The initiative underscores Khon Kaen University’s commitment to fostering innovation and addressing pressing societal challenges. By integrating academic expertise with community engagement, COLAB COLA KKU is paving the way for sustainable and impactful solutions in public policy and urban management.
This partnership is expected to serve as a model for other regions, demonstrating the power of collaboration between educational institutions and local governments in driving meaningful change.
