KKU NETSAT is now open twice yearly aiming at testing specific competencies of high school students and preparing them for university studies

September 17, 2021 – Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University met the press to release the news of the opening of the Northeastern Thailand Scholastic Aptitude Test Center (NETSAT). “Khon Kaen University intends to construct the testing that can assess learning intellects of high school students in the Northeast, in order to prepare them for their university studies. The test will also indirectly have impact on the improvement of the instruction in schools towards the system that targets competency more than rote learning. The new instructional system will emphasize the teaching and learning that trains students to think, so that the graduates will be leaders in social development, who can create technologies and innovations for the country. KKU also supports all programs of studies to set the required competency for the graduates and incorporate the instructional process that will enhance the new-era skills.”

The Northeastern Thailand Scholastic Aptitude Test Center (NETSAT) is established with the vision to be the “National Leading Scholastic Aptitude Test Center.” The objectives are to set the center for assessment of the intellect and competency of high school students so that they are prepared to enroll into the university, and to change the instructional, assessment and evaluation methods in high schools towards competency-based system.

Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Ph.D., Vice President for Education and Academic Service explained to the KKU Transformation team in an interview about the intention of KKU to build more chances to high school students. “When TCAS began, KKU built tests that measure knowledge and abilities of school students who want to continue their studies at the undergraduate level. This test is called KKU SAT, which has been developed by a team of experts in the field so that the test will truly measure the students’ competency. When we implied that we could evaluate the competency or the aptitude of each student, without the students having to go to tutorial schools, the Isan schools started to adjust themselves, for this is a good chance for their students. In terms of policy, the University administrators see that we are in the right path. This is a long-term overview and it will reduce the gap faced by students in remote areas. They do not have to worry about competition, they only have to be hard working at schools and this will enable them to enroll into a university.”

Assoc. Prof. Prapansak Chaweerat, Ph.D., Director of the Academic Development and Administration Bureau and the Chairman of the Administrative Committee for the Northeastern Thailand Scholastic Aptitude Test Center explained at the press release that the test will be administered twice a year for the 11th and 12th graders from northeastern schools. The test will be administered at schools. The results will be useful for the students, for they will know the weakness and strength and improve themselves before applying for a university entrance. The test is scheduled twice on January 22-23, 2022 and August 20-21, 2022. The results will be announced on September 4, 2022. There will be 6 subjects in the test, 3 for each day and each subject is for 90 minutes.

Asst. Prof. Daranee Homdee, Ph.D., Manager of the Northeastern Thailand Scholastic Aptitude Test Center added that the results of the test are effective for 2 years as of the date of announcement. NETSAT Test is divided into NETSAT 1 and NETSAT 2. NETSAT 1 measures the general knowledge and is divided into 2 parts, the first is the Thai and English languages, testing both the reading and writing skills, and the second is mathematics. NETSAT 2 is the test of specific aptitudes, divided into 4 subjects: science and technology, which should be useful for students who want to enroll into faculties in sciences and technologies, and physics, chemistry, and biology. The evaluation scores will be separated for each subject.

“Khon Kaen University is responsible for the Northeast with other institutions in this region, which has over one million and two hundred thousand students at the high school level. Every year, KKU can enroll about 8,000 of these students. We try to offer the opportunities for these students. KKU SAT has been administered for 2 years. It is a standardized test that measures aptitudes of the students. NETSAT will offer more chances for the students as they do not have to go to tutorial schools as before since the test will emphasize competency or aptitude of the students more than knowledge,” Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha finally said.
