KKU Unveils Smart Flower Farm: A Student-Led Innovation Transforming Agriculture and Tourism in Northeast Thailand

Khon Kaen University has launched the KKU Smart Flower Farm 2025, a groundbreaking project led by students from the Agricultural Innovation Program, Faculty of Agriculture. Officially opened on January 22, 2025, the farm is set to become a new landmark for Northeast Agriculture Day 2025, blending cutting-edge agricultural technology with tourism and education. The opening ceremony was presided over by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of KKU, alongside Assoc. Prof. Dr. Darunee Jothityangkoon, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and attended by university executives, faculty members, and students at the Agricultural Technology Park, KKU.

A Living Classroom for the Future of Agriculture

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Darunee Jothityangkoon described the KKU Smart Flower Farm as more than just a flower garden—it’s a living classroom designed to equip students with hands-on experience in modern agriculture. Funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), the project aims to produce work-ready graduates by integrating practical skills with innovative technologies.

The farm is not only a learning hub for students but also a new tourist attraction for Northeast Thailand, offering visitors a relaxing and inspiring experience. It reflects the future of agriculture—modern, sustainable, and innovative.

Smart Farming at Its Best

Mr. Pachara Kaewhong, President of the KKU Smart Flower Farm 2025 project, highlighted the collaborative effort of faculty, staff, and students from all years of the Agricultural Innovation Program. Together, they developed a smart farm management system that incorporates advanced technologies at every stage of production. These include: smart irrigation systems for efficient water use; climate monitoring and control to optimize growing conditions; effective pest management using modern techniques; and safe use of fertilizers and chemicals to ensure high-quality, sustainable produce.

“This farm is a hands-on learning space for first- and third-year students, where they gain practical experience in land management, production, labor, and entrepreneurship. It’s also being developed as an agro-tourism destination, combining education with leisure,” said Mr. Pachara.

A Vision for Sustainable Agriculture

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul emphasized that the KKU Smart Flower Farm is a shining example of how innovation can transform agriculture. “This is not just a flower farm—it’s a living laboratory that nurtures a new generation of farmers who understand both traditional agricultural practices and modern technology. It lays the foundation for sustainable agricultural development, boosting economic value and improving the quality of life for farmers in the region.”

The farm features three main exhibition zones: Smart Water Management Systems – showcasing advanced irrigation technologies; Sensor-Controlled Farm Operations – demonstrating how sensors optimize farm management; Student Entrepreneurship Projects – highlighting fourth-year students’ work in production, processing, and product development.

The “Land Market”: A Student-Led Success Story

One of the standout projects linked to the farm is the “Land Market”, an evening market created and managed by students. The name is a play on the Isan word “lan,” meaning “run,” symbolizing the vibrant energy of the market. According to Mr. Ratchanon Raksat, a fourth-year student and project leader, the market began as a classroom project and has grown into a thriving business.

The Land Market caters to health-conscious students and families, offering chemical-free agricultural products, live music by students, a running track, a flower garden, and delicious food from food trucks. It’s also pet-friendly and provides ample parking, making it a one-stop destination for relaxation and enjoyment.

Held monthly with unique themes, the Land Market has become a major economic driver, generating up to 320 million baht for Khon Kaen Province. It’s a testament to how classroom learning can be transformed into real-world business opportunities, fostering entrepreneurial skills among students.
