KKU joins Russia to hold the 2nd Math Festival, inspiring students to learn Mathematics

Khon Kaen University and Russia held the “Second Mathematics Festival” aiming to inspire students to develop their potential

Saturday December 19, 2020 at the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN, Khon Kaen University – the Mathematics Education Research Center of Khon Kaen University and Russia organized the “Second Mathematics Festival”. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic Service presided over the opening ceremony. The activity was led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Narumon Changsri, Director of the Mathematics Education Research Center, who gave a reporting speech. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Prapansak Chaweerach, Director of Office of Academic Service and Administration welcomed the participants.

Among the roughly 300 participants were, besides 31 lecturers and KKU administrators, 127 seventh graders and 142 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in mathematics education of Khon Kaen University and the organizers. The second Mathematics Festival this time was supported by the Moscow Center for Continuous Mathematical Education, Higher School of Economics, Math Department, Russia, led by Assoc. Prof. Ivan Vysotskiy, with supplementary budget from the Russian Embassy. The event duplicated the Mathematics Festival held continuously every year for 40 years in Moscow, Russia. It was aimed at developing necessary skills for the future and developing the core value for mathematics teachers.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic Service said that the second Mathematics Festival reflected the collaboration between Russia and Thailand. The Education and Academic Service Section of Khon Kaen University organized this event with the Mathematics Education Research Center and the Institute for Research and Development of Teaching Profession for ASEAN. The event also demonstrated the continuous collaboration between Khon Kaen University and the Center for Continuous Mathematical Education, Higher School of Economics, Math Department, Russia. The collaboration has continued for over 10 years under the APEC – Lesson Study Project. The activity this time was an inspiration to the participating students to develop their own potentiality. It is part of the project organized by the Office of Academic Development and Administration called ‘KKU Next Project’, for it reached the target group at the secondary education level with regard to the provision of information and guidelines for their future studies in the future and for their life-long learning.

The festival was fun and entertaining the participants with various activities, for example, mathematics games, Mathematics Olympiad competition. Participants were also given prizes and certificate of attendance.
