Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University

Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University explained that this conference is organized for mathematics educators and those interested in the psychology of mathematics teaching. There are over 100 member countries and thus its strength can be well understood. The conference has been organized 43 times and the 44th time should be organized in Thailand by Khon Kaen University and the Center for Excellence in Mathematics and the Institute for Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST). The conference to be hosted in Thailand was approved in the 43rd meeting in Sweden and should be held this year. However, with the new Coronavirus spreading (COVID-19), it cannot be organized. The mathematic group all over the world thus decided that an online conference is held and the The Annual 44th Meeting of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME44) under the topic: Mathematics Education in the 4th Industrial Revolution: Thinking Skills for the Future” shall be postponed. The meeting will be held to respond to the 4th industrial revolution and the subtopics will be on the thinking skill for the future or next year. For today, this Virtual Meeting is arranged and is interested by many. There are 2,563 participants signing in from 96 countries. The meeting is something to be pleased about for there are mathematicians from all over the world meeting together for 2 days. It also benefits Khon Kaen University that hosts the meeting, for we will be widely recognized.

Assoc. Prof. Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic Services said The 2020 Virtual Meeting of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education is the great meeting of mathematics teachers of the world. What is important is that mathematics instruction is the key basis for the living of the 21st Century. Developing thinking skill is from thinking  in mathematics. In the past, the development of mathematics instruction in most developing countries was slow because it relied on rote learning. Application of the thinking skill development in classrooms in KKU has been done continuously. KKU has joined and hosted APEC meetings, which are part of human resource development for over 15 years through cooperation with Office of Higher Education Commission. Meanwhile, Khon Kaen University also has a strategy in Education Transform, which is a bid transform in education. This is under the responsibility of the Education and Academic Service Section. Some parts will be adjusted, i.e., in the instruction of Khon Kaen University, from the teacher-centered teaching paradigm to learning paradigm in which the students learn by themselves. Since in the future, man will live with artificial intelligence or AI, instruction and curricula must be modified to correspond to the change. Things related to AI will also be incorporated in the courses.

The 2020 Virtual Meeting of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education is organized prior to The Annual Meeting of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME). It is an international mathematics meeting that has been organized regularly every year from 1977. Khon Kaen University by the Education and Academic Services and  Institute for Research and Development in Teaching Profession for ASEAN joined The International group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (IGPME) and the collaborating network to host the Zoom Meeting this time. The 44th Annual Meeting of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME44) is the meeting in which the new teaching paradigm will be dealt with, which responds to the policy of KKU that aims towards Learning Paradigm as well as to the world’s educational direction that emphasizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) and development of technology and innovations for future skills.

The 2020 Virtual Meeting of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education featured a special talk by Professor Marcelo Borba from State University of São Paulo, Brazil on: “Future of mathematics education post-covid-19: digital technology, critical education and epistemology”. The key issue was in the online instruction approaches and the educational directions after the COVID-19 situation. There were also presentations of academic works of mathematics scholars from 98 participating countries in the forms of Working Group and Research Report by means of an online system.
