KKU hosts Asian-Pacific Cleft Lip-Palate Congress

KKU runs the 9th Asian-Pacific Cleft Lip-Palate Congress to foster cleft treatment via interdisciplinary method

On November 11, 2019, at The Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid, Mr. Somsak Jungtrakul, a Khon Kaen governor, presided over the 9th Asian-Pacific Cleft Lip-Palate and Craniofacial Congress and the 12th Annual Meeting of THAICLEFT. The congress is organized by Tawanchai Cleft and Craniofacial Center of Khon Kaen University, a center directed by Professor Bowornsilp Chowchuen (MD).

The conference highlights the importance of all-rounded cleft treatment by means of World Health Organization’s (WHO) community-based method. The meeting was well-attended by experts and cleft lip-palate practitioners from 21 countries around Asian-Pacific region.

Mr. Somsak Jungtrakul delivered welcome speech to nearly 400 seminar participants and noted that cleft lip-palate and craniofacial defection evolves during pregnancy due to incomplete development of the tissues around the nasal and oral cavities. The disease is found intensifying in the northeastern part of Thailand and the Mekong sub-region, which is an area with the world’s record of most frequent occurrence of cleft. The disease causes physical and mental trauma to the patients as well as their families while the treatment is excessive and medical interdisciplinary is required at all processes of the treatment.

Professor Bowornsilp Chowchuen (MD) said cleft lip palate and craniofacial disease is reported with significant patient rate in Thailand. About 1000 babies are estimated to be born with the symptom annually and around 600-700 cases are from the Northeastern region, proportionally 2-2.5 cases per 1000 new-born babies. The treatment and remission of the disease require consistent collaboration from different medical professions.

Tawanchai Cleft and Craniofacial Center of Khon Kaen University has provided all-rounded international standard of treatments for cleft patients.
