Khon Kaen University has assured staff and students that the recent earthquake on March 28, 2025, which caused tremors across several regions of Thailand, including Khon Kaen Province, has not compromised the structural integrity of its buildings. The university has confirmed that all facilities remain safe for use.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Choopong Thongkamsamut, Vice President for Physical Ecosystem and Environment, stated that under the directive of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chanchai Panthongviriyakul, President of KKU, an immediate inspection was conducted as part of the university’s updated Business Continuity Management (BCM) plan. The inspection, carried out from March 29-30, 2025, involved collaboration with deans and administrators from various faculties to ensure the safety of all buildings and facilities.
The inspection revealed that while minor damage was observed in some areas, such as chipped plaster, dislodged tiles, broken glass, surface-level cracks, and subsidence in concrete walkways, the main structural integrity of all buildings remains unaffected.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Choopong emphasized that all facilities are safe for use and expressed his gratitude to the teams involved in the inspection and recovery efforts, including the Physical and Environmental Division, the Building and Facilities Division, the Utilities and Environmental Division, and the Security and Safety Division. Their swift and coordinated actions ensured the university’s operations could continue without disruption.
KKU has also urged staff and students to report any signs of structural issues, particularly diagonal cracks or expanding pre-existing cracks on columns or beams, to the Physical and Environmental Division or the Building and Facilities Division. This will allow the university to promptly assess and address any potential concerns.
