In a remarkable display of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, a team of talented students from Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy has captured the spotlight by winning the prestigious 2nd Runner-Up Award at the “SPARK THE LOCAL 2024 BY PTT” competition. The NAGOYASH team’s groundbreaking concept of transforming humble broken rice into a trendy snack called “POP RICE” has not only earned them recognition but also demonstrated the potential of upcycling agricultural byproducts.
The competition, held from November 8-10, 2024, at the BLOCK Zone, Siam Square, brought together young innovators under the compelling theme “Revamp, Transform, Build a Brand.” The NAGOYASH team, comprising five dynamic marketing students – Ms. Napat Chankhuntod, Ms. Papawarin Obeaom, Ms. Laksika Ruangsri, Ms. Natyada Thipsot, and Ms. Supapit Saengklang – impressed an esteemed panel of judges with their creative solution to food waste.
Their innovative project caught the attention of industry experts including Ms. Varootsurang Thamaree from PTT Public Company Limited, renowned food stylist Mr. Suthipong Suriya, agricultural innovator Mr. Nipon Pila, food development specialist Ms. Mayura Pradthanaplean, and TikTok marketing guru Ms. Siriphon Matchim.
Working in collaboration with the Organic Agriculture Community Enterprise for Happiness in Kalasin Province, the team transformed NAGO brand’s broken rice into an appealing snack that combines taste, convenience, and modern packaging. This innovation not only addresses food waste but also creates a viable commercial product that appeals to contemporary consumers.
The competition challenged participants to revolutionize traditional Thai processed foods through three key aspects: revamping products to meet modern taste preferences, transforming packaging to add value, and building compelling brand stories that celebrate community identity. The NAGOYASH team excelled in all these areas, creating a product that bridges traditional agriculture with modern consumer demands.
