March 27, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Khon Kaen University Phenome Center and Cento Golden Group Company Limited held a press conference and a forum to report news about the success of healthy rice research project – “Baiboon Rice”. Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University, presided over the opening ceremony and gave the opening address. Among the distinguished attendants were Ajarn M.L. Manida Suksawasdi, Ph.D., member and assistant secretary of the Phenomics Research Implementation Committee and Academic Services; Khun Tanaporn Kultawatsiri, a researcher of KKU Phenome Center; Mr. Chalermwit Thadthan and Miss Nitrada Sriyo, representatives from Cento Golden Group Co, Ltd. The event took place at Beegins Co-working Space, 1st Floor, Khon Kaen University Science Park Main Building.
Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University, said that the objectives of the establishment of the Phenome Center are: 1) to deploy research work and academic services in precision medicine, precision agriculture, and precision nutrition based on phenomics technology as the major tool and mechanism for research development at Khon Kaen University by the researchers of the center, and researchers from governmental and private organizations; 2) to provide full-cycle services related to academic aspects, research and development of products – from discussion of research questions, research design, research implementation, and transfer of the research outcomes to users, in order to strengthen the products from research basis; and 3) to increase the excellence of technologies and innovations that will be useful in medicine, agriculture, nutrition, food and drugs in governmental and private sectors. The “Baiboon Rice” is another success of the work of KKU Phenome Center.
Mr. Chalermwit Thadthan, a representative from Cento Golden Group Co, Ltd., talked about the collaboration between the company and KKU Phenome Center that in the middle of 2023, Cento carried out research on Baiboon Rice and joined Khon Kaen University Phenome Center under the assistance of Khon Kaen University Science Park. The Phenome Center is the center with experts who are well equipped with phenomics research technology. That was the beginning of the “Baiboon Rice” Project.
“Baiboon Rice” is a kind of white rice that has undergone gelatinization process (by high-pressure steaming that controls the quality of rice). This process makes the nutritional matters in the rice husk enter the rice. Moreover, the process reduces the interference of different insects such as moth and ants. The research and development of the product began from experimentation design that made the digestion system in the test tube mostly resemble the human digestion system. The digested rice was then taken from the test tube for analysis of the antioxidant property and sugar release. The components of major nutritional factors were also analyzed using phenomics technology and by experts from Khon Kaen University. The end result was rice with low sugar content, enabling consumers to safely control their sugar level.
