Friday October 6, 2023 – Khon Kaen University by the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy, Faculty of Engineering, KKU Library, Innovation Institute, Science Park, and KKU Academy jointly organized the Thailand Health AI Symposium. The opening session was presided over by Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University.
Assoc. Prof. Wimonrat Sri-rach, M.D., Chairperson of the Committee organizing the event reported that Thailand Health AI Symposium was part of Thailand Health AI Conference and Datathon 2023, which has been held the 50th time of the world Health AI Datathon. The event at Khon Kaen University was also part of the celebration of the University’s 60th Anniversary. It was well cooperated by the network of research and medical school, Clinixir, especially the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University; Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University; the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA); and Microsoft Thailand.
“This Datathon event, besides promoting the advent of AI in health circle, also aimed at lessening the health gap among the population.”
Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University, welcomed the participants to “Thailand Health AI Symposium”, by saying that the world was at the stage of paradigm transformation in many circles by the arrival of Artificial Intelligence, in business, industry, education, and healthcare.
“I am pleased that Thailand Health AI Conference & Datathon 2023 has been initiated as a key mile stone to celebrate Khon Kaen University’s 60the Anniversary. It is also a good opportunity that Prof. Leo Anthony Celi and international and national experts in Health AI join together here to share their knowledge and valuable experiences for the benefits of the work in Health AI and for promoting a learning community in this field in Thailand, which is also one mission of Khon Kaen University.”
The atmosphere of the Thailand Health AI Symposium was welcoming, starting from lectures and discussions of international experts for exchange of viewpoints and experiences in the development of works in Health AI. The next part was a Workshop on AI and Data Science skill development that will be useful in healthcare.
The final session featured presentations of the teams entering the final round of Datathon, the topic of which was from 3 Data Sets, i.e., Scleroderma, ICU, and Hypertension. The Hypertension-2 Team won the first prize, receiving a cash award of 20,000 baht. The first runner-up was Scleroderma-3 Team, while the second runner-up was Hypertension-4 Team and the third runner-up was ICU-1 Team.
“Hypertension 2” won the first prize of Health AI Datathon 2023.
“Hypertension 2”, the winner of the contest explained that their work was called: “The impact of blood pressure variation on renal and cardiovascular outcomes in the Thai population”. The problem was from the database of over hundred thousand of patients with hypertension. The team analyzed the variation of the blood pressure into standard deviations (SD), and found that high blood pressure SD was correlated to incidence of other diseases and to higher death rate than the group with low blood pressure SD. Therefore, in the treatment of hypertension, besides controlling the blood pressure at a good level, the variation of blood pressure should be controlled too to prevent implications and to lessen the death rate. Clinically, this is possible from treatment with medicine that controls blood pressure for at least 24 hours.
“Nowadays, there are a lot of patients with hypertension coming to receive treatment at hospitals. If the database and AI can be used for the analysis, the risk of death of the patients can be reduced. It is hoped that the work will benefit the society in the future.”
The members of Hypertension 2 Team included Dr. Maturos Buranasakda, from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University; Dr. Praew Khotruchin, from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University; Burin Bunwatcharapai, an information officer from Siriraj Data Innovation Center (SiData+), Faculty of Medicine Sriraj Hospital, Mahidol University; Witchakorn Bunprakom, a 2nd year student majoring in computer science, College of Computing, Khon Kaen University; Nawamin Onkhwan, Nattakit Jirasettanon and Apiwat Ja-kunchorn, 2nd year students majoring in computer engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Khon Kaen Univesity. The team was under the supervision by Dr. Praisan Padungwiang, from the Department of Computer Science, College of Computing, Khon Kaen University and Dr. Anutchet Patanateepapon, from the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University.
