Cholangiocarcinoma Research Center extends its mission into Lao PDR to help Cholangiocarcinoma patients

November 17-30, 2022 –  The Cholangiocarcinoma Research Center of Khon Kaen University and the Tropical Public Health Institute in Laos (Lao TPHI) carried out field work to screen liver fluke disease of the people in PATHUMPON Town, Jampasak Province under the Combatting Cholangiocarcinoma Project in Lao PDR. The Project is granted an amount of fund from Kadoorie Foundation, Imperial College London.

Roughly 2,000 people registered for screening the disease from 10 villages, namely, Ban Na Kham, Ban To Mo Tha, Ban Pak Toi, Ban Pong Poh, Ban Huay Yang, Ban Muang, Ban Phao Samphan, Ban Lak, Ban Tan Piaw. Roughly 20 officers from Thailand and Laos were working for this project. The officers were from the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Center of Khon Kaen University, the Tropical Public Health Institute in Laos (Lao TPHI), Department of Public Health, Jampasak, and Pathumpon Hospital.

 

The activity was the extension of the 2019 implementation in Lao PDR. Following this, the Cholangiocarcinoma Research Center of Khon Kaen University will go on screening cholangiocarcinoma by ultrasound and conducting operations on the patients. The next step is training of the health professional team of Jampasak Province.
