March 29-30, 2021 at Sirikunakorn Room3 and by an Online system – Academic Development and Administration Bureau organized a workshop on the design of outcome-based programs to answer the new transformation of curricular paradigm. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bandit Thipakorn, an Academic Council member of Khon Kaen University and a Senior Vice President for the Academic Affairs of King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi was the guest speaker and trainer of the workshop. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bandit Thipakorn quoted 10 models of programs at undergraduate, master’s degree and doctoral degrees of different faculties and colleges in Khon Kaen University as the examples for the workshop, with a critique and recommendation sessions for the key concepts in the design of an outcome-based program. Those who are responsible of curricular design should change their concepts and aim more at the outcomes that will happen to the students such as from the curricular philosophy towards the establishment of goals and the Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs), with the Learning Outcomes (LOs) among the learners spelled out. Moreover, the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) should be demonstrated to show the connection between the program learning outcomes and the outcomes according to the national qualification standards.
Design of programs should therefore begin with the setting of the program learning outcomes, which should integrate the outcomes according to the national qualification standards, the goals of the university, the goals of the program or the professional goals. After PLOs have been clarified, then there will be the transfer of knowledge in order that the learners will reach Learning Outcomes (Los). Along the line, there are the assessment and instructional methods, the essential components for the implementation that will lead to the goals set. In setting the Learning Outcomes (Los), emphasis should be on how to make the learners possess the knowledge and skills, the attributes or characters according to the program’s goals. The workshop also featured the question and answer session that led to further development and promotion of the outcome-based program designs. At the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maitree Inprasitha, Vice President for Education and Academic Service expressed his hope for each program of the university to retouch their details so that they aim more towards the outcomes. One model is a competency-based program, which is one important approach under the new Learning Paradigm Curriculum, where the Teaching/learning structures are changed.
