Dead Inside may not be known by many, but it is a mental condition requiring medication even though it is not physically dangerous. As the world is changing, people may be facing or receiving bully, attacks from others by words or aggressive behaviors in many aspects. These psychologically affect people, who have to live on. Sometimes, someone may not like what he or she is doing. Someone may not have any passion in life, not be keen or pleased with anything or anyone. Such people do things just to complete them and believe they are not able to choose. It could be better if we do not hold on to anything and leave it to nature. The Dead Inside condition, however, is the act of let go of everything even though the heart aches. This can develop to depression.

The warning sign of Dead Inside is the feeling of no goal. Questions arise related to life. There is the feeling of inactiveness and physical loneliness. The cause of Dead Inside is from the psychiatric symptom such as depression, PTSD or tension after undergoing a hurtful situation, tension or over-exhaustion. At the same time, use of depression medicine also affects the way the brain makes decision related to emotion. As for emotional suppression, sometimes strength and patience for every matter without showing weakness or tears may lead to Dead Inside. Someone who feels bad about oneself or thinks he or she fails, fears that others will be disappointed; may not want to meet anyone, becomes worried, cautious and afraid of everything. Many choose to live with these feelings as they think they can manage themselves.

Sunday September 10, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. to 16:30 p.m. – The Primary Health Care Unit 123, Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University held the workshop to make students know and understand emotion, depression, sadness and to be able to analyze themselves and face the unwanted situation that may occur. The trainers were from the Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, including: Assoc. Prof. Warissara Luweera, M.D., Dr. Pornpawee Pruekpitikul, M.D., Dr. Tanakit Rungruanhratanakul, M.D., Dr. Nonpawit Chotechai, M.D., Dr. Nattapop Pinakatapo, M.D., Dr. Thattapong Withaisong, M.D., Dr. Papontee Sriboon, M.D., Dr. Janteera Polwiwat, M.D., and Dr. Vimala Bouphavanh, M.D. There were over 50 students participating in the workshop, which was held at Sirikunakorn Room 3, Sirikunakorn Building, Office of the President, Khon Kaen University.

The workshop was held for students who are adolescents and have to adjust themselves socially, express themselves orally and online; so that the students will understand and recognize their emotion and the depression condition. As a result, they would be able to take care of themselves and become aware of the problems and solution approaches. The students are able to apply the knowledge obtained from the workshop to lessen the sad emotion and manage their own problems. The workshop also enhances students to express themselves and interact well with others so that they will trust them and relate their problems to them.

Ms. Wilawan Unruan, a senior professional nurse, the head of this project and Ms. Nawaporn Buddanoi, another member of the project said, “This disease may emerge from sadness and accumulated tension. It can also happen from brain chemicals, or something inside the nerve that does not function normally. This is a mental disease that can be treated, for sadness is natural and can happen to anyone. Depressive Mood is a normal condition, it is a negative emotion that comes and goes, caused by loss, disappointment, tension, while Depression is the sad emotion that occurs from continuous losses and hopelessness from what has been highly expected or worries about the future. The feelings may develop into the Major Depressive Disorder that affects mental health for a long time, thus influencing work, thinking, leading to lack of confidence until loss of being oneself.”

Ms. Wilawan Unruan added, “The morning session today features a lecture about mental problems that can happen to students, the causes and ways to take care of these. The talk is the compilation of experiences in operating the clinic and giving advices. The next activity is a forum to answer questions from students in different aspects by doctors from the clinic. The session closes with experience sharing by doctors from the Primary Health Care Unit 123 about, “Before Being Cool, We Used to Fail”. The afternoon session will be activities at 6 stations that will help students to understand themselves and train in using different skills to relieve themselves when they have a problem. They will learn and understand more about sad emotion or depression. The activities today will also result in a channel to communicate with students on line: Line OA, and trainee students today will learn how to adjust their behaviors, become cognizant of their own emotion, and are able to manage their own problems.”

August 10, 2023 – Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University held the Share and Learn Project, which is an annual event held every year. This year, it is under the topic: “Enjoy Learning for Sustainability Organization”. Prof. Songsak Kiatchusakul, M.D., Director of Srinagarind Hospital, presided over the opening ceremony.

This project has as its objectives to promote learning and sharing for the personnel so that they are able to exchange experiences and success and utilize the knowledge for improving their job; and to discover ‘Best Practices’ under the missions of the Faculty of Medicine from the bodies of knowledge possessed by each individual for more utilization. The target is knowledge management: one department per one major body of knowledge that leads to a sustainably learning organization.
The 39th Happiness Games or the Sports Competition of Thai University Personnel was held at Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University from May 25 to June 3, 2023. The highlight of May 30 was at the swimming games: 50-m backstroke and 50-m breaststroke of men under 29 years of age. It turned out that Mr. Natthapat Boonyuen, a swimmer from Khon Kaen University won the golden medals for male 50-m backstroke and 50-m breaststroke. He also won two more silver medals from male 50-m freestyle and 50-m butterfly style, totaling 4 medals just for himself.

Natthapat Boonyuen from Khon Kaen University’s International Demonstration School said, “I have been swimming for 15 years and used to be a university sportsman. Swimming is fascinating for me for it’s good for my concentration and health. I practice every day after work. I’d like to urge every staff of KKU to allocate time for exercising for your health. You will work more efficiently. For this game, I expected to get 4 gold medals, but I lost, only due to the 0.02 second missing. So I could only win 2 gold medals. Anyway, I’m still happy for the medals. Next year in Chiangmai, I’ll do my best to get 4 gold medals.”
