November 7, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. – Khon Kaen University by the Division of Education Quality Development carried out the Sharing EdPEx & Good Practice Project. Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University chaired the meeting and clarified the objectives of the project before the event began. Asst. Prof. Saowalak Sukprasert, a National Quality Award Auditor and an Education Development for Performance Excellence Sub-committee member gave a talk on drawing lessons towards excellence and preparation for EdPEx300 (Education Criteria for Performance Excellence). The meeting, held at Sirikunakorn Room 3, 2nd Floor, Sirikunakorn Building, was attended by more than 100 deans and administrators from all faculties.

Assoc. Prof. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, M.D., President of Khon Kaen University explained that EdPEx 200/300 is the education quality criteria towards excellent operations. It is the framework for developing the management and administration quality, which is internationally accepted on a wide scale and is the prototype of the national quality award (TQA). With cooperation from all faculties, the management and administration of Khon Kaen University should pass the EdPEx criteria, both at the faculty and the university levels. This means the conceptual framework for systematic organizational administration would be efficient, enabling the University to sustainably and rapidly develop. “For the faculties that have not passed the EdPEx 200/300, the meeting today is a good chance to learn from the faculties with good governance.”

Asst. Prof. Saowalak Sukprasert, a National Quality Award Auditor and an Education Development for Performance Excellence Sub-committee member talked about the success factors, the role of the Coach/ Facilitator, and the role of internal auditors. The talk also covered the education criteria for performance excellence (EdPEx), the criteria of which are the same as the National Quality Award evaluation used for the university and faculty levels. “Everyone knows that the criteria for the institution to consider are systematic operations that are put into real use, regular, with complete coverage. The operations can be followed up and evaluated for improvement. The improvement has impact on achievement in accordance with the expected directions and the outcomes of the improvement, whether these can lead to sustainability or not. EdPEx 200/300 at the faculty level is not difficult, but the University must be the mechanism that supports the faculties, by giving recommendations for the faculties’ continuous competency, and at the same time, the intensiveness of the internal auditors must be increased so that the results of the evaluation can be put into real use.

The event included lectures and talks by the representatives of faculties receiving EdPEx 200 and EdPEx 300, and the faculties passing TQC (Faculty of Medicine) and TQC Plus (Faculty of Dentistry) to share their experiences. There was a forum on “Good Practices for Developing Educational Quality towards Excellence by EdPEx Criteria” by the Deans of the faculties passing EdPEx 300 and TQC, namely, the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy, and Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts.

The other forum on “Good Practices for Developing Educational Quality towards Excellence by EdPEx Criteria” by faculties passing EdPEx 200 – Faculty of Associated Medical Science, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Education, College of Local Administration, Faculty of Agriculture, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. At the end, KKU President presented the certification of honors to the faculties passing EdPEx 200, EdPEx 300 and TQC.

“I’m from Yasothorn and received continuous treatment because my aunt who is a nurse suggested that my mother join the Foundation. My first surgery was when I was 3 months old. I had frequent surgery during my primary school. When I was in high school, I met an orthodontist once a month. The treatment did not interfere with my school. I entered KKU from the Portfolio round that requires TOEIC of 500 up. I worked hard on this for 2 months and got 715. I was very happy. Use of English is not a problem for pronunciation. I’d like to say to parents to give moral support to your children both in terms of learning and living. If your children are successful in anything, though very small, you should show your appreciation. As a Tawanchai Ambassador, I’d like everyone to be strong, practice what you like. All have your own ability.”

Tuesday August 29, 2023, at 9.00 – 10.30 a.m. – Khon Kaen University carried out the project: enhancing nice community around the campus. Ajarn Natsamol Tanakulrungsarit, Assistant to the President for Special Affairs presided over the training, with Mr. Kamolpong Thongdeenok, Deputy Director of Sam Liam Municipal School; Mr. Somchat Chai-ayut, Chairman of Sam Liam 3 Community; Asst. Prof. Tanapatsakorn Sukitprapanon, Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Soil Science and Environment, Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University; and Mr. Chumporn Para, Director of the Communications Division. The training, held at Sam Liam Municipal School, was attended by over 100 students, interested community people.

KKU’s project to enhance nice community around the campus aims to promote or strengthen the communities around the campus to create nice living places and good relationships between the University and the communities, in accordance with the strategic plans of administration 2020-2023 and under the Strategy of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) towards Creating Shared Value (CSV).

Ajarn Natsamol Tanakulrungsarit, Assistant to the President for Special Affairs said that Khon Kaen University sees the importance of the communities nearby. And on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the University, this project to enhance nice community around the campus is carried out to promote and strengthen the communities and promote academic service works that will bring new bodies of knowledge to the communities for sustainable development.

“Sam Liam Community is the first model community that joined in the promotion and building of garbage separation, with Sam Liam Municipal School being the learning resource of the community. At the same time, the project instills the youths with awareness in organic waste management at the household level, by teaching them to make compost and hence lessen the amount of waste efficiently. The community people can apply the knowledge at home. This kind of project of KKU will be regularly carried out.”

Mr. Somchat Chai-ayut, Chairman of Sam Liam 3 Community explained about the need of the community and the approach for community development. Sam Liam 3 Community has received good cooperation from the school and Khon Kaen University. The problem in the community lately is the big amount of waste that could not be collected by the Municipality according to the time set. The problem is the community’s trouble. Despite the Municipality’s attempt to buy more garbage trucks, they are not enough. Therefore, the community has to revise the approach to dispose of wastes from the household level.

“We have shared the problem of the community to Khon Kaen University, and we have received cooperation from the University by performing this project to enable the people to know how to manage the problem by themselves. This will be sustainable for the community in waste disposal and hopefully the amount of waste will be reduced.”

After the opening session, Ajarn Natsamol Tanakulrungsarit, Assistant to the President for Special Affairs gave the baskets for making household compost to representatives from Sam Liam Community 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Then another kit set for making compost was transferred to the school as the learning resource for compost making from leave and food wastes. The next session was the training on reduction of food waste by making compost by Asst. Prof. Tanapatsakorn Sukitprapanon, Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Soil Science and Environment, Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University.

Asst. Prof. Tanapatsakorn Sukitprapanon revealed that in general, there are many kinds of household waste, including scraps of plastics and metal and organic wastes that can be made into compost, which can be used for growing vegetable, trees and helping to manage the problem from the beginning. At the same time, this lessens the labor cost, too.

“Normally when we dispose of waste, the Municipality of each community will collect it. Next is the separation process. The management of waste here requires cost. If householders separate organic wastes, it would help to lessen cost and labor required for this process. Making compost at the household level is not based on any fixed formula. The food wastes and leaves can be dumped at the prepared place to be filled with manure that helps decomposing. Sometimes, manure may not be used because of its smell. At this stage, we must add water to increase moisture.”

“Dry leaves take 2 months to decompose, while fresh vegetables and fruits take only 1-2 weeks. Tree branches must be chopped first and left to ferment for a couple of weeks before the decomposed part can be used as fertilizer. From research on management of many organic materials, it was found that compost including dry leaves will improve the chemical and physics properties of soil, making it fertile and good for growing plants and crops. The soil can absorb fertilizer much more.”

Monday August 28, 2023 – Khon Kaen University by the Faculty of Medicine, Fculty of Engineering, College of Computing, KKU Academy, KKU Library, Office of Teaching and Learning Innovation and the network of Faculties of Medicine from Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Sirirach, CliniXir network and Bangkok Bank joined to host the “Unlocking Insights Through Data Comprehension: A Pre-Datathon Workshop”, which was run by Prof. Mengling ‘Mornin’ Feng, at Computer Laboratory 3, 5th Floor, Library Building, Khon Kaen University. The workshop was abother activity under the Thailand Health AI Conference & Datathon 2023, which was also aimed to celebrate KKU’s 60th Anniversary.

Assoc. Prof. Sirapat Chiawchanwatana, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Computing said that the health system of Thailand is said to be the prototype of many countries. We have the health data that is recorded in the health service system and the research on health being used at present. But these still have limitations in the completion of the data system and the use of data for solving problems in the health care system. It is therefore the opportunity to organize the Datathon Competition in Thailand.
Khon Kaen University has collaborated with Prof. Mengling ‘Mornin’ Feng before. This is a good chance to develop a community network of experts in health data and AI so that there will be cooperation in deploying works on Health AI for utmost benefits to the people.

The 60th Anniversary of Khon Kaen University is a good opportunity to hold the 50th Health AI Datathon, which is also organized worldwide. The event features conference on Health AI and activities that enhance learning of Health AI.
“The use of Datathon in health care is the medical operations through data that have been analyzed scientifically. AI will increase the precision in decision made on treatment or health care. It is hoped that this project will share the invaluable experiences to all.”

Datathon 2023 – space for students’ technological and academic integration

Asst. Prof. Chitsutha Sumlek, Vice Dean for Research and Innovation of the College of Computing said that the Thailand Health AI Conference & Datathon 2023 workshop opened a chance for participants to listen to lectures from world-class experts.
At the same time, it enabled youths to join in Datathon competition. The organizers prepared 3 sets of data, from Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University andFaculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital Mahidol University including hard skin disease, ICU data dn hypertension disease for speedy solution of problems.
“Datathon helps doctors to acquire data better for preparing treatment and lessen errors from diagnosis. Doctors will be able to analyze and plan the treatment more quickly and accurately.”

Datathon cannot rely on just one science, there must be a mixture of personnel. One team would concist of at least a doctor, and other technical experts. “A doctor cannot work alone, for there can be the data, but the technology for data analysis might be missing. The technological personnel may not understand the data. Therefore, they need to work together.” This is the new dimension of working as a strong network in the future that will benefit people and the society.
Natnarin Phonpraphruet, a graduate student in Data and AI Science of the College of computing said that this project is interesting for technological learners to access data. It is a chance for students to work with people from other fields including medical and engineering. They could join in analyzing the data which is big in number and then build Health AI Datathon for further extension for the society in the future. It is another issue that will give students experiences and more skills.

Datathon 2023 Event
After Thailand Health AI Conference & Datathon 2023, there will be the Thailand Health AI Summit comprising lectures, group discussion led by experts from overseas and in the country. This is scheduled on October 3, 2023 at Athenee Hotel, Bangkok.
Next is the Thailand Health AI Datathon – a competition on management and building of a model for analyzing health data, scheduled on October 4-5, 2023 at the Library Building, 3rd Floor, Khon Kaen University.
