On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Center for Arts and Culture at Khon Kaen University hosted the grand annual event, “Boon Duean Ha (The Fifth Month Merit-making): Buddha Procession and Respect for Elders”, at the Cultural Village by Si Than Lake. The event aimed to preserve the traditional Heet Sip Song (Twelve Isan Traditions) and reflect the cultural values of the region. This year’s celebration followed UNESCO’s recognition of “Songkran in Thailand” as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023, highlighting the importance of safeguarding Thai traditions. The Boon Duean Ha festival is a significant Isan tradition that KKU has upheld for years.

The festivities began in the late afternoon with vibrant activities, including a sand pagoda-building contest (Tob Prathai), a zodiac cleansing ceremony, a water-pouring ritual for Buddha images and a replica of Phra That Phanom, and a candle-lighting and prayer ceremony for Luang Por Phra Sri. Distinguished guests, including Dr. Narongchai Akrasanee, Chairman of the University Council; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chanchai Panthongwiriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University; and Mr. Siriwat Pinijpanich, Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen Province, joined the ceremonies. Over 1,000 participants, including university executives, faculty members, students, staff, local community members, and the general public, gathered to celebrate in a warm and lively atmosphere.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham, Vice President for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy at KKU, emphasized the significance of the event, describing it as a joyful yet orderly celebration that respects human rights and traditions. Following the main ceremonies, attendees were treated to a stunning display of cultural processions, including the Buddha Procession and Respect for Elders and the Nang Sang Khan Parade (Miss Songkran Beauty Queens Parade) from different faculties and departments. These colorful and creative parades showcased the energy and creativity of the younger generation, blending cultural preservation with modern innovation. Other highlights included a water-pouring ceremony to honor elders, a floral alms-giving ritual, and captivating Isan cultural performances by Mor Lam (traditional Isan folk opera) artists, creating a warm and proud atmosphere that celebrated the essence of Isan heritage.

Clara Ancilia Pramita Kusumasri and Afif Ihza Abdala, students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, along with Aye Chan Soe, a student from the International College at KKU, shared their excitement about participating in the grand festival. “We are thrilled to be part of such a fun and magnificent event. This is our first time experiencing Songkran in Thailand and at Khon Kaen University,” they said.

“In our home countries, we don’t have local traditions like this. Today, we got to immerse ourselves in the activities, ceremonies, and parades, which allowed us to deeply appreciate and learn about Isan culture. It was incredibly fun, and we were especially impressed by everyone’s traditional attire. We’re grateful that KKU organized this event for both staff and students to enjoy together, and we hope to join again next year.”

In celebration of Khon Kaen University’s 60th anniversary and its stride into the seventh decade in 2025, the Khon Kaen University Library has unveiled a new service innovation: the “KKU Research Skill Enhancing Hub,” or simply, “KKU Research Hub.” This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive learning environment and support the development of essential research skills for students, faculty, and researchers.

The KKU Research Hub is designed as a “Phygital Learning Experience”—a hybrid model that combines both Physical and Digital Hubs. It offers a wide array of resources that support every stage of the research process. The content is organized into 12 modules covering all essential steps: Research Question, Literature Review, Hypothesis Generation, Research Design, Sample Size Calculation, Data Collection, Data Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Result Interpretation, Manuscript Preparation, Reference Management and Research Publication and Presentation

The Hub offers a diverse range of materials including videos, physical books, digital books, journal articles, open-access content, and both traditional and Generative AI-based research tools. In particular, the platform features prompt templates designed to help researchers effectively use Generative AI tools throughout the research process.

The event, held from April 2–6, 2025, at the National Convention Center in Vientiane, Lao PDR, aimed to highlight KKU’s role and capabilities in digital technology at the regional level. This participation was part of a strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Technology and Communications of Lao PDR, a key partner in advancing digital innovation in the region.

The event, themed “Strengthening and Sustaining Lao PDR’s Digital Infrastructure”, focused on three pillars: Digital Government, Digital Society, and Digital Economy. It brought together high-ranking officials, academics, educational institutions, private companies, and technology experts from various countries. Emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), are revolutionizing every sector, and Lao PDR cannot afford to lag behind. • The “AI Wao Ja” application and an AI-powered CPR robot, developed by the College of Computing.

Khon Kaen University successfully hosted the “DE OUTBOX: Digital Entrepreneur Showcase – The Concept to Concrete 2025” event, aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurial skills among students to prepare them for the challenges of the digital business era. The event concluded on April 1, 2025, at Central Khon Kaen shopping mall, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of KKU, presiding over the closing ceremony and presenting awards to the winning teams.

Dr. Charnchai praised the creativity and ingenuity of the participating students, emphasizing that their projects reflect the university’s mission to produce graduates equipped to navigate the rapidly evolving digital business landscape. “The innovative ideas presented here demonstrate the students’ ability to transform classroom knowledge into tangible outcomes, showcasing their readiness to become future leaders in digital entrepreneurship,” he remarked.

The event featured 16 student business teams competing in three categories: Cosmetics, Platform & Services, and Food & Goods. Winners received cash prizes and opportunities to collaborate with business partners and funding sources, with total prizes exceeding 30,000 baht.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongsutti Phuensane, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy, highlighted the event’s broader impact, stating, “This platform not only allows students to showcase their potential but also facilitates networking with industry professionals, providing invaluable insights and experiences that will drive sustainable growth in innovation businesses.”

The two-day event, held from March 31 to April 1, 2025, was a collaborative effort involving six faculties. Additional activities, such as talk sessions and live folk music performances, attracted over 500 attendees.

From March 12 to 15, 2025, Khon Kaen University, represented by the Faculty of Education, participated in the CAMPUS-Asia 6 (CA6) Meeting and the Hybrid International Student Conference (HISC) 2025 at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. The event brought together six leading universities from Asia: the University of Tsukuba (Japan), East China Normal University (China), Korea National University of Education (South Korea), Khon Kaen University (Thailand), Institut Teknologi Bandung (Indonesia), and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia).

The KKU delegation, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charuni Samat, Vice Dean for Education and Academic Services, included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pornsawan Vongtathum, Vice Dean for Research, Innovation, and International Affairs; Asst. Prof. Dr. Parama Kwangmuang, Assistant Dean for Innovation and Enterprise; and Ms. Pornpisut Duang-ngern, a doctoral student and former exchange program participant. The team actively engaged in discussions, knowledge exchange, and presentations, showcasing KKU’s academic achievements on the international stage.

During the CA6 Meeting Part 1, Asst. Prof. Dr. Parama Kwangmuang presented KKU’s progress and achievements in the CAMPUS-Asia 6 project. The presentation highlighted three key areas: innovative teaching methods for 21^st-century learners, cross-cultural exchanges fostering communication and collaboration skills, and strategies for addressing administrative challenges while building sustainable educational partnerships. The session also featured case studies of successful student exchange participants, demonstrating the program’s positive impact on academic and personal development. The presentation was well-received, with attendees praising KKU’s practical and forward-thinking approaches to global challenges.

In the afternoon, the CA6 Meeting Part 2 focused on student-led presentations. Ms. Pornpisut Duang-ngern shared her experiences and achievements from the exchange program, emphasizing the program’s role in enhancing academic and life skills. Her presentation resonated with the audience, highlighting the program’s success in fostering personal and professional growth.

The delegation also participated in HISC 2025, where students from various countries presented their projects. Khon Kaen University (KKU) participated in an academic and research collaboration trip to six leading universities in the United Kingdom from March 15-20, 2025. The first visit was on March 15, 2025, led by the Dean of the International College to the School for Business and Society, University of York, to discuss academic and research collaborations at the college level, with funding support from KKU

Following this, from March 17-20, 2025, KKU representatives, including the Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, the Dean of the International College, and the Assistant Dean for International Relations of the International College, visited and engaged in discussions with five universities: Queen Mary University of London, University of Leicester, University of Nottingham, University of Leeds, and University of Manchester. These visits were supported by the UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) of the British Embassy Bangkok.

This initiative focused on enhancing the internationalization of KKU by engaging in high-level discussions with university executives, faculty members, and senior staff. The key areas of discussion included improving the quality of international education and research, student and faculty exchange programs, and the development of joint academic programs. This visit marks a significant step in strengthening KKU’s global partnerships, and it is expected to bring sustainable benefits to students and faculty members in the future.
