The online training, “Media Production for Publicizing Community Products and Services,” under Khon Kaen University’s U2T Project, took place on 30 June 2021 from 9:00am-12:00pm. It was organized by Asst. Prof. Dr. Arunee Promkham, the head of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Systems, Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University.

The training attracted 26 university students and recent graduates working for the U2T Project in Khok Sa-nga Subdistrict, Phon District and Ban Thaen Subdistrict, Chonnabot District in Khon Kaen. Media production knowledge and skills gained from the workshop will be applied toward publicizing the products and services already available in these communities.

The trainer, Mr. Paisarn Ekawat, a scholar in audiovisual media affiliated with the Department of Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Systems, covered topics such as digital media design, media designing tools, and multimedia (VDO) production.

The event was a continuation of Asst. Prof. Dr. Arunee’s work as a U2T coordinator. While overseeing U2T work in Khok Sa-nga and Ban Thaen Subdistricts, she realized the benefits that enhanced media production skills would have for publicizing the high-quality products and outstanding people in the area. Not only would successful PR lead to market advantages, it would help to spread knowledge of project activities to the general public.

Topics included were: 1. Digital Design, 2. Design Value, 3. Principles of Quality Design, 4. Artistic Elements, 5. Media Designing Tools, 6. Multimedia Production, 7. Multimedia Scriptwriting, 8. Photography Techniques, and 9. Sequencing. In terms of workshop components, training participants practiced doing Mockups and E-Books.

Finally, the project would like to thank Mr. Paisarn for his collaboration and the support that he offered throughout the training. It is hoped that the session was beneficial to the graduates and students who attended and that all participants will be able to apply and build on what they learned to carry out media production for the project.

The online training, “Writing News for Public Relations,” targeted U2T project coordinators with the hope of strengthening knowledge relevant to messaging and publicizing activities under the project. The event was organized by Asst. Prof. Dr. Arunee Promkhambut, U2T leader at Khon Kaen’s Ban Thaen District in Chonnabot, and Mr. Chumporn Para, Director of KKU’s Communication Affairs Division. Mrs. Wadchara Noichompoo, public relations specialist, was the main trainer, and she was supported by Miss Jiraporn Pratomchai, a KKU publicist. There were 35 participants.

The field of public relations involves intentional management of the image and reputation of relevant public organizations and groups. The dissemination of messages and coordination of other activities are carefully planned to create understanding, acceptance, and a positive attitude toward the organization. This creates collaboration and support for the group’s mission and work, helping to meet their goals.

Mrs. Wadchara said that even without graduating directly in the field of news writing, one can write professional news stories as long as they learn proper news writing principles and techniques. She therefore believes that those working under the U2T project will be able to write quality stories that will help to disseminate information, as well as coordinating other PR activities.

Mr. Sakda Sayasone, a U2T project worker who attended the training, said that his participation at the event had helped him gain knowledge and learn good techniques for writing PR news. He believes that applying these techniques will help to create knowledge and a full understanding among readers.

Finally, the project would like to thank Mr. Chumporn, Mrs. Wadchara, and Miss Jiraporn for their hard work in organizing the training in order to spread knowledge among the participants. Aside from strengthening news writing skills among U2T coordinators, reinforcing their capacity to report on their work and project activities, the training was a personnel development opportunity for youth and created potential human resources for the news writing industry. The project truly hopes that the training was beneficial and that participants can apply what they learned, developing and building on the knowledge they gained in order to write useful news relevant to the U2T Project.

Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Agriculture led a workshop tailored to the Non Chai Village Loom Weaving Group on “Logo creation and digital marketing to enhance product value and expand product market.” The workshop took place in Non Han, Chum Phae District, Khon Kaen. The event, advanced as part of the U2T Project, aimed to develop OTOP products, increasing distribution channels and community income.

The workshop was led by Asst. Prof. Fakjit Palinthorn, the project leader, and a U2T working group on 23 June at the Non Han Subdistrict Administrative Office. Honorable presenters included Mr. Napadol Klinsrisuk and Miss Sasiyapha Samranrom, designers and product developers, and Miss Natthakarn Otton, Public Relations Officer working in the Corporate Communications Department of the Science Park located at Khon Kaen University’s Office of the President.

The workshop was organized in response to the problems and needs expressed by the Non Chai Village Loom Weaving group. The group is run by agriculturist housewives who have been supported to build careers as loom weavers. Their OTOP-certified products include loincloths, shawls, scarves, male and female sarongs, and cloths dyed using tie-dyed patterns and natural dyes.

Despite the high quality of their products, the group has had trouble attracting enough customers. After some surveying, this was partly attributed to the logo and packaging of the products, which lacks distinction, does not help to make the product memorable, and does not do justice to the identity or origin of the products. In addition, it was found that the COVID-19 situation had affected the group’s traditional sales platforms, and their sales had visibly decreased.

The Non Han Subdistrict U2T working group used this information to develop the workshop. Through the course of the day, they hoped to design a logo and packaging that would convey the loom weaving group’s identity and distinguish their products from others. They also hoped to develop an online marketing model, which would allow the community’s income to increase despite COVID-19 and which could be built on to reach new markets in the future.

The day’s activities attracted 50 participants, including the chairperson and members of the Non Chai Village Loom Weaving group, the U2T working group, and Non Han subdistrict administrators.

The workshop was divided into 2 parts, a lecture component and a hands-on component:

1. Lecture topics included product and logo naming, selecting shapes and elements, selecting fonts in line with messaging, using memorable tones and colors to convey emotions, features of packaging, packaging materials, packaging design principles, material selection, and new, interesting, and recently developed forms of packaging. In terms of market expansion via digital marketing of community products, lecture topics included basic marketing knowledge, the 4P strategy, pricing techniques, competitor analysis, consumer behavior on digital platforms, and popular online marketing platforms. Participants showed a high level of interest and had strong participation during the lectures.
2. During the hands-on workshop component, participants brainstormed in smaller groups, allowing everyone to reflect on the uniqueness and identity of their products. Each group then created their own logo and packaging design based on the concepts they had brainstormed. After the groups had presented their work and explained the concepts and ideas behind the different elements in their designs, everyone then assigned scores in order to vote for their favorite logo and packaging. Finally, at the end of the workshop, there was a demonstration of how to open an online shop on Facebook, and participants tried out selling their products using Facebook Live. The participants were excited to join in and very interested in the interactive workshop activities.

Thanks to the active participation of everyone who attended this event, the designers and product developers and the U2T working group were able to gather all of the design ideas and information shared in the small groups. They will use this information to design a logo and packaging, as well as an online marketing plan. This will help meet the U2T project goal of increasing community members’ income.

On 10 June 2021, Khon Kaen University held a video editing workshop for the U2T Hackathon 2021. The workshop was led by Professor Tidarut Boonmars, Vice President for Innovation and Enterprise, and her working group and was held online using Zoom Meeting. The meeting laid out video editing guidelines for the hackathon. Workshop attendees included more than 200 administrators, faculty, coordinators, and employees.

Throughout the month of May 2021, Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy with the Center for Asia-Pacific Tourism (CAPTOUR) brought a team to three subdistricts in Kalasin Province under KKU’s Project for Sustainable Development (University to Tambon, or U2T). The team partnered with lecturers to lead 8 training events in the province, aiming to train communities and improve knowledge related to language and tourism in the subdistricts of Na Chueak and Nong Tok Paen in Yang Talet District and the subdistrict of Pha Sawoei in Somdet District.

The Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy with the Center for Asia-Pacific Tourism (CAPTOUR) led a team in Kalasin Province for the full month of May, 2021

In Na Chueak, Yang Talet District, 2 training events were held at the headquarters of the subdistrict’s Administrative Organization. Each event was led by 15 paid U2T workers and drew 60 participants, including youth and volunteer community guides.

The first event was held from 7-8 May and included topics related to Japanese Language and Culture; Phrases used in Tourism, Restaurant Services, and Accommodations; and Simple Simulations for Handling Japanese Tourists. The lead lecturer was Pichaya Pitayawatanachai, a qualified lecturer and teacher at Khon Kaen Wittiyayon School.

The second training event was held from 17-18 May 2021 and included topics related to English for Basic Communication in Daily Life, English for Guiding Community Tours, and English Knowledge and Skills for Tourism. The lead lecturer was Piangtawan Chawong, a qualified lecturer and dentist.

In Nong Tok Paen, Yang Talet District, 3 community training events were held with the aim of preparing youth and volunteer guides in the community. The events were held at the headquarters of the subdistrict’s Administrative Organization, were led by 18 paid U2T workers, and drew 60 participants, including community leaders, members of the community youth board, and officers from the subdistrict’s Administrative Organization.

The first event, on the topic of Principles for Tourist Guides, was held from 10-11 May. The lead lecturer was Asst. Prof. Thirachay Chaigasem, director of CAPTOUR. The second training event, with lead lecturer Pichaya Pitayawatanachai, was held from 14-15 May on the topic Japanese for Tour Guides and Tourism, and the third event, with lead lecturer Piangtawan Chawong, was held from 19-20 May on the topic English for Tour Guides.

 In Pha Sawoei, Somdet District, 3 training events were held in the Pha Sawoei Municipality Meeting Room. They were each led by 12 paid U2T workers and drew 60 attendees. The training events were targeted at youth and volunteer guides and aimed to enhance knowledge and skills applicable to community-based tourism.

The first event, with lead lecturers Asst. Prof. Thirachay Chaigasem and Piangtawan Chawong, was held from 21-22 May on English for Basic Communication and Vocabulary in Daily Life. The second training event, with lead lecturer Asst. Prof. Thirachay Chaigasem, was held from 24-25 May on Principles for Tourist Guides. The training offered knowledge related to tourism, leading tourist activities, and principles for tourist guides. The final training event for the month had lead lecturers Asst. Prof. Thirachay Chaigasem and Pichaya Pitayawatanachai and was held from 28-29 May. The training focused on Basic Japanese Vocabulary and Phrases for Tourism.
